wNewsNet Core Functions

The PDF management is used for the processing of PDF production files. Single page PDF files which include composite data are supported. Moreover, the processing of single page postscript files up to PS level 3 is also possible.

  • Reception of PDF files from network shares or local directories
  • System for the definition of workflow chains in accordance to the identification data in file names or the size of the pages (e.g. automatic RIP output for the title 'News', manual output for the title 'Advertiser' or automatic output of broadsheet pages but manual output of panorama pages)
  • Layout function for automatic cropping of not needed margins
  • Centralized storage of the production data for multiple outputs
  • File output to all RIPs possible, which provide spoolfolders
  • Output balancing if more than one RIP is available

PDF-Preflight / PDF-Correct

Checking the RIP / manufacturing capability of PDF files and correction of found errors.

  • Preflight
    • Review of PDF files for potential production risks (e.g. 'font is not embedded')
    • Provided standard validation rules and the possibility to import own validation rules (ADOBE Acrobat Prof. is needed as editor)
    • Pages with production risks are identifiable through a warning status in the CONTROL-Client. The problematic area is highlighted in the PDF page preview.

  • Correction
    • Automatic correction of errors or inappropriate set parameters in PDF files (whether a correction is possible, is depending on the nature of the problem)
    • Provided standard correcting rules and possibility to import own validation rules
    • Preview of a adjusted PDF file is possible in the CONTROL-Client

Sheet Assembly (PDF and TIF)

Automatic and manual assembly of sheets can be done with TIFF files as well as with PDF files (with wNewsNet-TIFF and wNewsNet Professional TIFF only with TIFF files).

  • Automatic sheet assembly
    • Automatic assembly of pages to sheets based on pair plans (plan editor is available in the CONTROL-Client)
    • Function for creating sheet layouts (e.g. 2Up, 4 Up). Functions for adjusting the sheet layout such as rotating and scaling pages (scaling is not possible in TIFF)

  • Manual sheet assembly
    • Manual sheet creation is possible via 'drag & drop' in the CONTROL-Client
    • Sheets, which have been created automatically, can be manually modified later

  • GAPGAIN-Auto
    • Automatic positioning of the pages on the sheet for correcting the creep
    • Support for 2Up and 4Up sheets
    • Possibility to define correction values for a fixed number of sheets
    • Possibility to define dynamic offsets, by which the offset for each sheet will be calculated individually

  • Highres-support
    • Support of high-resolution 6/2 sheets (12 broadsheet pages on one plate with an up to 2500 dpi resolution)

The TIFF-management serves the processing of TIFF files and their output to image setters. CCITT Group4 and LZW compressed bilevel TIFF files with an up to 2500 dpi resolution are supported.

  • Input/Output
    • Receiving TIFF files from network shares or local directories
    • System for defining workflow chains depending on identification data in file names or the dimension of the pages (e.g. automatic output for the title ‘news’, manual output for the title ‘advertiser’ or automatic output for broadsheet pages but manual output for panorama pages)
    • Layout function for automatic cropping of not required margins
    • Centralized storage of production data for multiple output
    • Output of data to all CTF or CTP devices possible, which provide spoolfolders
    • Output balancing with several exposure units (cohesion of pages is guaranteed; all separations of a page will be sent to the same exposure unit)
    • Priority control – pages with a higher priority will preferred during the output
    • Function to output multiple copies of a page
    • Color sorting during the output (e.g. CMYK or KMYC or in case of two copies CCMMYYKK  or CMYK, CMYK)
    • Plate type identification: Data for a specific plate size will only be send to exposure units, which are populated with the right plate. If the exposure unit sends information about it's available plate types, the allocation adapts automatically. If there is no communication interface to the exposure units, the user can configure the available plate types in the CONTROL-Client manually

  • Plate layout
    • Adding of ‘platefurnitures’ (e.g. bendmarks, barcodes, plain texts or tapes for removing unwanted image regions)
    • Adding of ‘merge files’: Merge files are TIFF files such as control wedges or graphic control elements, which have been ripped before and saved in wNewsNet. wNewsNet merges these files into the output bitmap.
    • Innovative functions for defining conditions, when a platefurniture element will be drawn onto the plate (e.g. ‘draw elements for color measurement only if it is a colored page’)
    • Layout function with which the page on the plate image can be moved independent of the platefurniture
    • Dynamic adjustment of the output bitmaps during the output to different exposure units (e.g. automatic adjustment of the bitmap rotation during the output to CTP or CTF)

wNewsNet is featured with an automatic versioning. Single pages as well as sheets will be versioned.

  • A new page version will be triggered automatically, if PDF files or TIFF-separations will be received again
  • A new sheet version will be triggered automatically, if a page of a sheet will be received again or a manual change is applied
  • System option with which the output of old versions can be allowed or prevented in general (if the output of old versions is allowed, the user will receive a warning about outputting an outdated page)
  • Supporting of ‘Late Black’ in the TIFF workflow (a very late sent black will be attached to the correct color separations)
  • Supporting of ‘black replacement’ in the TIFF workflow (if only black is sent again, wNewsNet can be configured to replace it in the existing page instead of creating a new page version)
  • Manual adjustment of the versioning:
    • Possibility to change an old version to the actual version
    • Possibility to generate a new version of separations of different old separations (only in the TIFF workflow)

Approval Workflow

The approval workflow makes it possible to approve or reject pages or sheets by the user. It is possible to configure individual release states (e.g. ‘rejected’, 'editorial approval’, "production approval"). If the optional module PROOF2WEB (page view in the webbrowser) will be used, the approval functions will also be available there.

  • approval of pages and sheets with the CONTROL-Client
  • approval of pages and sheets with the  PROOF2WEB-Client (optional)
  • Workflow chains can be configured to trigger production processes like RIP or imaging depending on page approval.

The archive function offers the long term storage of production files. The files will be saved in the file system. wNewsNet creates a folder structure, which corresponds to the production structure (e.g. date, title, edition, page).

  • Copies of PDF files or TIFF files, which have been sent to wNewsNet will be stored in the archive
  • There is the possibility to copy files from the archive into the wNewsNet hotfolder again (e.g. if production data have been deleted by mistake).
  • The storage capacity is only limited to available disk space
  • Configurable scheduler, which deletes outdated files automatically

For the administration of the system a special ADMIN-Client is available. Multiple ADMIN-Clients can be installed on different workstations.

  • Configuration of the workflow
  • Configuration of the user rights for the PROOF-Clients
  • Configuration of the web users (PROOF2WEB option)
  • Integrated configuration backup: The workflow configuration can be exported via ADMIN-Clients as XML file. This file is a backup. After a software reinstallation, e.g. on a new hardware, the configuration can be restored by importing the XML file
